Avid announces Pro Tools 11, iOS-compatible hardware interfaces

Software upgrade concentrates on faster performance

Avid has announced Pro Tools 11, the next version of its high-end audio production software. The update concentrates mainly on speed; it for instance uses a new audio engine, which is said to offer "multiple times" the performance for Pro Tools 10. Along the same lines, the app has converted to 64-bit architecture, gained offline bounce and a low-latency input buffer, and enabled dynamic host processing, which should allow more simultaneous plugins.

Metering has been improved to show gain reduction for all dynamics plugins on each channel, and wider standards support. A new video engine meanwhile lets people handle the soundtracks for clips in formats such as DNxHD and QuickTime; this includes using hardware video interfaces.

Pro Tools 11 and HD 11 should ship sometime this quarter. The former will cost $699; as for HD 11, only upgrades from HD 9 and 10 have been revealed, at costs of $999 and $599, respectively. Upgrading the regular edition of Pro Tools to 11 will cost $399 in the case of 9, or $299 for 10.

Avid has meanwhile started selling two bus-powered audio interfaces, the Fast Track Solo and Fast Track Duo. The two are the company's first to offer direct support for iOS devices through their USB ports, instead of requiring an adapter cable. Each interface is equipped with two gain controls and level monitors.

The Solo ($179) sports one XLR mic input, a 1/4-inch TS instrument input, a 1/4-inch TRS headphone output, and two RCA line outputs, among other features. The Duo ($299) uses two combo XLR/TRS inputs for handling mics and instruments, and has two 1/4-inch line inputs, matched by two 1/4-inch TRS outputs.
