New tools offer more author flexibility, better tracking of sales
Barnes and Noble e-publishing subsidiary Nook Media today announced the launch of Nook Press, a new self-publishing platform offering authors a fast and free way to write, edit, collaborate, and offer eBooks to avid readers. The new platform replaces the previous PubIt! platform after two and a half years of service.
The new platform allows authors to write, edit, format, and publish work in one place, with exclusive content tools -- all at no cost -- and sell books to millions of Nook customers within three days. New content-creation tools enable authors can easily upload a manuscript once, then continue to write and edit directly within Nook Press, quickly turning their work into a professional-quality ePub file that is sold exclusively through BN.com and associated outlets such as the Nook online store.
Nook Press also gives authors a wide range of sales reports -- allowing tracking of sales trends, as well as providing merchandising opportunities on the Nook Store. Select content will be in social media campaigns, e-mails and newsletters directed to millions of NOOK customers, resulting in broader audience reach, potentially more sales and new independent bestsellers. Authors retain the rights to the content of the book and can sell versions of it elsewhere, though a careful reading of the legal agreement is strongly suggested, as some rights may be surrendered to the publisher inadvertently.
Nook Press authors can price their titles between $1 and $200 and receive a competitive royalty based on the given price. For Nook e-books priced at or between $2.99 and $9.99, authors receive 65 percent of the list price for sold content. For those priced at $2.98 or less, or $10 or more, authors receive 40 percent of the list price. Nook Press authors will be compensated from the list price set with no additional charges, regardless of file size.
