Google shipping Glass Explorer Edition within month

First registrations to get Glass by Google developer event

Google will be shipping Glass to developers "within the next month," according to comments made during the Google Ventures Glass Collective event. The Explorer Edition of Glass, meant for programmers and costing $1,500 per device, could reach customers before the company's developer event, Google I/O, on May 15th.

It is likely for developers to talk about Glass at the event, even if the hardware is not shipped, though it is suggested by TechCrunch that the Glass Mirror API could be launched during I/O. A combination of the hardware and software at I/O could help generate more excitement over the head-mounted device.

No details relating to the quantity of shipments were made, but it is probable that the initial wave will be just for those that signed up for the Explorer Edition at I/O last year. The 8,000 winners in the Glass social media contest could end up waiting until later this year for their ones.

The Glass Collective, the organization the event was promoting in the first place, consists of a number of firms that will work together to help fund Glass-related projects. Google Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, and KPCB will jointly review pitches for start-ups that use Glass, and will provide financing and support for successful applicants.
