Twitter suffers brief outage of 't.co' redirect service

updated 03:25 pm EDT, Thu April 11, 2013

User confusion, reposts impacted usability of service

For about 22 minutes earlier today, all links posted to microblogging service Twitter stopped working. During the outage, which affected "t.co" redirects, the rest of the service was functioning properly -- albeit without external links. While Twitter acknowledged the issue after it was repaired, the service is not forthcoming about what caused the problem in the first place.

The outage affected both new and older links, all using Twitter's own t.co service. Twitter shared a message shortly after the rectification of the issue, saying that "some users may have experienced an issue with links contained within Tweets. This issue has been resolved as of 7:10 AM PT."

Perusal of tweets during the outage demonstrated some user confusion about the issue, with a large number of tweets being repeated, presumably because the user assumed that they did something wrong in posting the link. Other redirect services were not affected by the outage.
