Kevin Lynch said to be heading team of iPod veterans at Apple

updated 09:48 am EDT, Fri April 12, 2013

Purpose of group uncertain

Former Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch -- now Vice President of Technology at Apple -- has gathered together a team comprised mostly of iPod veterans, says French site MacGeneration. One of the people is said to be Robert Curtis, who has worked for four years on iPod firmware. Another is Steven Bollinger, who is credited in a number of media player and touchscreen patents belonging to Apple.

Other members of the team are said to have worked on everything from iPod interfaces through to materials. It's not clear why Lynch would want to be surrounded by iPod specialists, but it's speculated that the team could be ideal for Apple's smartwatch project. A previous report indicated that over 100 people are working on the device.

Apple's interest in watches may be directly linked to iPods. The sixth-generation iPod nano had built-in clock functions, and proved unexpectedly popular as a watch, leading many third-party accessory makers to make watchbands. Apple nevertheless dropped watch functions in the seventh-gen Nano, possibly because it had a smartwatch in mind.
