Twitter Music launch may coincide with Coachella festival
Twitter may be launching its much-rumored music service later today, according to reports. A new page under music.twitter.com gives little in the way of clues for the service, and simply shows the Twitter logo, the hashtag "#music" and a sign-in button that requests permission to use the user's Twitter account for an app called "Trending Music Web," but currently redirects to the same page again.
Sources of All Things D claim that the app will launch either today or during this weekend's Coachella music festival. The app itself is said to suggest artists and tracks based on the user's account, including messages relating to artists or songs, the tastes of followed Twitter accounts, and other personalized metrics. Clips of music can then be played inside the app from other services, such as iTunes, SoundCloud, and Vevo.
Yesterday, Twitter confirmed it had acquired the social music discovery service We Are Hunted. Employees of the startup have been found using the #NowPlaying hashtag on Twitter, seemingly testing the service in public. Accounts of the We Are Hunted service will be erased in the future, with already-downloaded mobile apps likely to cease functioning or have a reduced service once user data gets deleted from the servers.
