Nintendo shuttering nearly all of Wii console online channels

updated 08:20 am EDT, Sat April 13, 2013

Wii Shop still running, move designed to push consumers to Wii U

Despite the console still being available, Nintendo has announced it will shut down the larger part of the Wii's online abilities on June 28. Channels being discontinued are the Nintendo Channel, the News Channel, the Forecast Channel, the Everybody Votes Channel, and the Mii Contest Channel. Also being lost are data exchange, and in-game messaging on most games.

The shutdown is intended to pressure users into purchasing a Wii U console if the interactivity is still required. Both the Wii and Wii U are available at retail, with a "mini" Wii console available in some markets.

"Wii Channels are the main gateway for a variety of easy-to-use, interactive multimedia, entertainment and communication functions," Nintendo said in the announcement. "We at Nintendo sincerely thank you for your continued patronage of our company's products. We apologize to those of you currently using these services."
