Intel CEO: $200 touch-based Windows 8 devices in future

Bay Trail Atom architecture to help cut device prices

Touch-based devices running Windows 8 and using the upcoming Bay Trail processor could cost as little as $200 each, according to Intel 's CEO, Paul Otellini. The upcoming Atom Micro architecture due to be released by the end of 2013 will help bring device prices lower, as well as allowing for improved device designs and features.

"If you look at touch-enabled Intel-based notebooks that are ultrathin using [Bay Trail] processors. Those prices are going to be down to as low as $200," said Otellini during a quarterly results conference call, reports CNet. Upcoming Haswell-based ultrabook systems are expected by Otellini to start from $500.

The quad-core 22nm Bay Trail system-on-chip has previously been said to provide double the computing performance of current tablet processors, and improved on-chip security. An Intel executive in China claimed that, not only will Bay Trail be the "most powerful Atom processor to date," but it will allow for designs as thin as 0.3 inches, with the chip's lower power consumption allowing for batteries to last an entire day, and for weeks on standby.

A $200 Windows 8 device, be it a tablet or notebook, may allow Microsoft to salvage the slow uptake of its new operating system, though it may put off customers from buying the $500 Surface RT.
