Briefly: Facebook Home expands reach, Google Play updates

updated 08:24 am EDT, Wed April 17, 2013

Facebook home downloadable in UK, Canada

Facebook Home is now available to Android users in the UK and Canada, after the limited launch in the US. The Home launcher, replacing existing front end software used on Android smartphones, allows users to see their Facebook news feed from the home screen, and includes a number of socially-focused elements, including the Chat Heads system released earlier in Facebook Messenger. The initial range of devices that can use the Google Play download remains unchanged, populated by the Samsung Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III, HTC One X, One X+, and One.

Google adds option for tablet screenshots in Play Store

Google has updated its developer guidelines to allow app producers to show off their app in tablet-specific screenshots. Images of the app running on a 7-inch or 10-inch tablet can be uploaded to the Google Play Developer Console, which will be shown preferentially when users view the app store through the relevant device, according to the Android Developers blog. The update will allow customers to see what an app will ultimately look like on their tablet, and to encourage developers to continue working on tweaks to make their app more suitable to larger displays, as well as smartphones.
