Samsung admits to astroturf attacks on HTC in Taiwan

updated 04:50 pm EDT, Wed April 17, 2013

Taiwanese Fair Trade Commission investigating, HTC likely to respond

The Taiwan Fair Trade Commission is reportedly investigating astroturfing attacks launched by Samsung denigrating HTC devices through the use of paid posters who did not disclose their connection to Samsung. The investigation was launched after a website accused the manufacturing giant of "evil marketing" when it was discovered to have used anonymous Internet users to criticize the devices by the rival company.

Posts discovered by the website included a user complaining that an acquaintance's HTC One X was constantly crashing, false benchmark reporting, and general praise for Samsung. Samsung claimed to have not received the formal announcement of the investigation by the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission, but did admit that the Taiwan division had been involved in an "unfortunate incident."

"Samsung Electronics Taiwan (SET) has ceased all marketing activities that involve the posting of anonymous comments," Samsung said on Tuesday in a statement. The statement continues to claim that it generally has "transparent and honest communications with consumers," and is working to stop the incident from recurring.
