4G subscriber numbers after five months of service in UK

British carrier Everything Everywhere, known as EE, has revealed that 318,000 people have signed up for its 4G LTE service, just five months after it launched the first 4G network in the country. The carrier hopes to extend the number past 1 million UK customers using its high-speed network by the end of the year.

The results, picked up by TechCrunch, suggests that EE has a relatively healthy headstart compared to other national carriers in offering 4G services. After the recent closure of the Ofcom 4G spectrum auction, other carriers such as Vodafone, O2, and Three will be offering their own high-speed services in the coming months, which could hamper EE's million-customer ambition. EE is working on rolling out its 4G LTE network into more markets in the country, with an additional expanded spectrum service set to operate in ten cities by June, along with testing of carrier aggregation.

Though the 318,000 4G and 4G-ready subscriber figure is relatively impressive for a relatively new carrier in the country, it is worth pointing out that the company combines both Orange and T-Mobile, and that only 2.3-percent of the entire customer base is on a 4G plan of some description. The figure also doesn't disclose the true number of customers actually using 4G, as the carrier will only cover approximately 55-percent of the UK population by the end of June, and over 70-percent by the end of the year.

Total service revenues for EE hit 1.42 billion ($2.17 billion) for the quarter.
