Aereo launching live TV streaming service in Boston in May

updated 11:48 am EDT, Tue April 23, 2013

Cloud-based DVR service roll-out to invite users initially

Live TV streaming service Aereo is going to expand its service to Boston, Massachusetts. Over 4.5 million people in the Boston metropolitan area will be able to use Aereo, which includes a cloud-based DVR as part of the service, and will be the second city that Aereo will operate in, after its initial launch in New York City.

Aereo will be sending invitations to pre-registered customers from May 15th, expanding to all elegible customers in the area on May 30th. Customers will be able to stream the 28 over-the-air broadcast channels to iOS devices, Apple TV, Roku boxes, and to desktop browsers. The roll-out in Boston forms part of a lengthy plan announced earlier this year, which would see the service hit a total of 23 cities, including Kansas City, Salt Lake City, Austin, Miami, and Chicago.

CEO and founder Chet Kanojia said "Consumers deserve more choice and flexibility in how they experience television and Aereo provides them a high-quality, rationally-priced alternative."

Though the company is expanding, Aereo is still battling with broadcasters over content licensing. While the National Association of Broadcasters lost an appeal to the US Second Circuit Court of Appeals over its attempt to shut down the service, both Fox and CBS are mulling over shifting their content to cable services, in an attempt to protect potentially lost revenues.
