Square Register 3.0 update adds restaurant-oriented features

Item libraries, Bluetooth scanners speed up checkouts

Square has issued a major update of the iOS and Android versions of Register, the app for the company's retail checkout system. Version 3.0 focuses on improvements for restaurants: customers can add custom tips, and the payment pad now supports multiple custom amounts, which can each have individual notes attached. On the iPad, customizable kitchen tickets can include a name or number, and orders can be modified at the counter.

Broader changes include a redesigned look, and new item libraries, which if set up can allow cashiers to quickly add multiple items to each sale. Each product can be assigned a custom name, photo, and price. Another iPad-only addition is the ability to sync a Bluetooth barcode scanner.

The app is a free download. The Square service costs an ongoing fee based on transactions.
