New chipsets offer up to three times the performance of HD4000

Intel has revealed limited specifications on its fourth-generation "Haswell" Core-series processors' video circuitry. The upcoming chip line features a graphical power boost well above the third generation, with three discrete levels. One tier is aimed at power efficiency, with two tailored for increased video performance.

Ultrabooks will be outfitted with new power-sipping 15W U-series processors, featuring the new HD5000 graphics subset. A second tier of U-series processors, dubbed Iris, are tailored for 28W power draws. The Iris graphical chipset, Intel claims, is up to twice as fast as the HD 4000 graphics chipset available in Ivy Bridge processors.

Iris Pro graphics gives the best performance on the third tier of chips. The new video chipset on the H-series mobile chips drawing 47-55W of power should double the performance again over the HD 5000. R-series chips running at 65 to 84W have a claimed triple-performance gain over the HD5000. M- and K-series desktop CPUs are slated to have either Iris or Iris Pro options, depending on specific processor model chosen.

All three graphics options on the new processors are OpenCL 1.2, DirectX 11.1, and OpenGL 4-compatible. Other features added are an enhanced 4k-resolution output, a three-screen collage mode for large multi-monitor setups. Few concrete details about the new features are available.

Intel hasn't revealed more details about the chips, other than describing the HD 5000 and Iris in broad strokes. the Computex Expo in June is expected to have a detailed Intel presentation about the new chips.
