BlackBerry reveals US DoD approval for newly-released OS and devices

No purchase plan announced, devices now on eligible purchase lists

BlackBerry today announced the US Department of Defense (DoD) has approved BlackBerry 10 smartphones and PlayBook tablets with BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 to be used on unsecured networks out of the box and unmodified. The new devices have been tested by the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), and are now listed on the Unified Communications Approved Product List.

Electronista has also confirmed that the reports from The Next Web of Samsung Galaxy and Apple iOS 6 devices being allowed on Pentagon networks are legitimate, with an official Department of Defense announcement due in the next two weeks.

The announcement notably doesn't refer to any imminent purchases, and reports from inside the Pentagon suggest that users and various commands may have opted for other purchase plans, such as the hundreds of thousands of iOS devices the Pentagon plans to buy in a switch away from BlackBerry. However, what DISA may mandate for use in the future for specific needs is an entirely different matter.

When reached for comment, a civilian employee at DISA had no specific remarks on BlackBerry's announcement, saying that "an official Department of Defense release will be made public forthwith."
