Nokia aiming to create a 'hero' Windows Phone, camera a differentiator

Nokia CFO Timo Ihamuotila has talked up the rumored forthcoming Lumia 928 as a 'hero' device, suggesting that the Finnish handset maker is aiming to directly target new handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One. Speaking to analysts following the company's Q1 results, which featured upbeat Lumia sales, Ihamuotila and Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said that Nokia is working on exclusivity agreements with carriers in the US and the UK to help give the phone a headline billing. Nokia has a special launch event scheduled for the official reveal of the aluminum-claddevice in London on May 14, where it also aims to pitch the photographic capabilities of its latest flagship Windows Phone 8 device.

"What we're trying to do is really make sure that we're shifting the focus towards hero experiences," said Ihamuotila. "So, you hear us talking a lot about imaging, and so, you should watch...for us to continue to advance the state of the art, like what is the best experience in imaging on devices," Ihamuotila promised.

Ihamuotila also added that photographic imaging will be pitched by Nokia as a key differentiator between its devices and the competition all the way throughout its range, from its top tier handsets, through to its low-end Lumia handsets. 'But the pattern you should also watch for from us is taking that experience and delivering appropriate levels of that experience on lower price point devices through the range...there is some form of differentiated imaging story," Ihamuotila said.

Nokia, which already has a strong reputation for the cameras on its devices, recently invested in Pelican Imaging to further bolster its camera technology. The new technology uses camera module that features an array of small lenses to capture images at multiple focal points for post shot tuning. While it will take some time for the new technology to filter through Nokia's lineup, it is rumored to be introducing a new Lumia with its true PureView technology sometime this year.
