Apple pulls share from Android, smaller platforms

iOS made significant gains in US mobile web traffic during April, according to Investing Analytics data obtained by Piper Jaffray. The platform reached a 69 percent share, up from 66.4 percent in March. The growth primarily at the expense of Android, which declined from 28.7 percent in March to 26.5.

"For the second straight month in our tracking of the data, iOS gained on Android as a source of mobile traffic," comments Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. "We believe the traffic data continues to demonstrate that iOS is not only the leading platform in the US, its users are generally more engaged with their mobile devices."

The data is based on traffic from 10 mobile websites: Answers.com, Tumblr, ChaCha, Examiner, LinkedIn, Bleacher Report, Hubpages, White Pages, Squidoo and Dictionary.com. By those metrics, the combined pool of platforms outside iOS and Android also lost ground, slipping from 4.9 percent to 4.5.

Breaking down iOS, the gap between iPhone and iPad users has continued to shrink. In March the iPhone represented 60.3 percent of traffic, versus the iPad's 39.7 percent. In April, though, the iPhone dipped to 58.3 percent, whereas the iPad grew to 41.7 percent.
