Toshiba first to have range of DivX Plus Streaming-certified TVs in UK

updated 03:05 pm EDT, Tue May 7, 2013

Extra DivX features provide multi-language subtitles, audio, chapters

Rovi has revealed that Toshiba will be the first television manufacturer to launch a range of DivX Plus Streaming-certified HDTVs. The addition of DivX Plus Streaming to the televisions will allow users to watch streaming content with typical features found in DVD and Blu-ray Disc usage, such as support for multi-language subtitles and audio tracks.

DivX Plus Streaming will also allow for Dynamic Resolution Scaling of content, allowing video to switch between different resolutions as seamlessly as possible, including cases where available bandwidth changes, and where the user changes the device they are viewing the content on. The software also offers a trick-play track for smoother fast-forward and rewinding, chapter points, and the option to resume paused playback across devices.

In the United Kingdom, the Rovi-powered Knowhow Movies provides an app that can be used on a number of smart TVs and devices, allowing the DivX Plus Streaming content to be viewed. While the app will work with basic functionality on a number of televisions, Toshiba is the first manufacturer to have their sets certified to use the standard, and so provide the extra features to users.

While the televisions with the DivX Plus Streaming certification have yet to be revealed by Toshiba, they are expected to be made available in the UK later this quarter, and are likely to reach other markets shortly afterward.
