YouTube Trends Map shows popular videos in areas of US

Google has created a new map that shows videos trending on YouTube by area. The Trends Map displays the most popular videos being viewed in major markets across the US, with the added option of viewing the top videos in areas by age band and gender. While it is covering the United States initially, the YouTube Trends blog states that there are updates due in future, which could include providing data on regional viewing habits in other countries.

Microsoft overhauls YouTube app for Windows Phone

Microsoft has updated the YouTube app for Windows Phone, allowing it to do more than effectively pass users to the YouTube mobile page. The revised app, available to download from the Windows Phone store, allows for videos, playlists, and channels to be pinned as Live Tiles, adds a new filmstrip-based playlist design, social sharing, the option to play a video's audio while the app runs in the background, and integration with Kid's Corner, according to the official Windows blog. Microsoft has previously complained about the lack of full YouTube compatibility for the app, calling Google's reluctance to open up YouTube further as a platform a demonstration of the search giant's anti-competitive tendencies.
