Syrian Internet restored, cut fiber optic cable alleged at fault

Google transparency report among first to report disconnection

Following yesterday's unexpected disappearance of Syria from the Internet, service to the war-torn country seems to be completely restored with no feared large-scale attack by the Syrian government against the rebels. Both the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency and Google's real-time reporting have demonstrated that traffic is increasing in the country.

During the outage, widespread fears emerged that the government of Syria had intentionally blacked out the country to prepare for a large attack on rebels, as it had in other incidents involving mass outages of communication services in the mideast in the past.

Google reported that its services became inaccessible in Syria around 2:45 PM EST Tuesday. Other Internet tracking companies also reported the loss of Syrian Internet connectivity at the same time.

"The Syrian government has been monitoring (the Internet) for years," US Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford said. "They have been using the Internet with Iranian assistance to track opposition activists, arrest and kill them."

"That is the reason why in our nonlethal assistance to the Syrian opposition, we put a special emphasis on communications equipment precisely to help the Syrian people tell the world what is going on inside Syria," he said.
