Sony Xperia ZR delivers Xperia Z performance in a 4.6-inch package

Sony has revealed the latest addition to its smartphone lineup for 2013, the Xperia ZR. Like its 5-inch Xperia Z stable mate, the Xperia ZR is notable for its built-in water and dust resistance, rated at IP55 and IP58 respectively. Yet at the same time, it packs the same quad-core Snapdragon S4 found in the larger Xperia Z into a more compact, 4.6-inch device.

Sony says that the Xperia ZR can be left submerged in up to 4ft of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. This allows users to use its dedicated camera key underwater without fear of damaging their device, while being able to take full HD video or shoot photos. The main camera uses a Sony Exmor RS sensor with HDR capabilities. It can also shoot in burst mode for up to 15 frames per second performance.

In line with Sony's new smartphone catchphrase 'The Best of Sony in a Smartphone," the 4.6-inch HD Reality Display is powered by Sony's Mobile Bravia 2 engine that uses the contrast enhancement tech from Sony TV division. This is said to be further optimized by the use of an OptiContrast glass panel that minimizes reflections and is designed to deliver a better viewing experience in full light.

The Sony Xperia ZR comes in four colors including black, white, pink and mint. It will be available this quarter with pricing details set to follow.
