Aluminum case uses metal band design, adds snap-on plastic covers

Nokia has formally revealed the Lumia 925 at its London press event this morning. Previously rumored under the project name of Catwalk and leaked yesterday, the aluminum-clad smartphone with a "unique metal band design" is being promoted with its 8.7-megapixel PureView smart camera with IOS and Carl Zeiss optics and flash as its main focal point.

In the front is a 4.5-inch AMOLED 1280x768 display with ClearBlack technology and curved Gorilla Glass, while on the back are three dots for wireless charging, with the usual bright colors found in the Lumia range being represented by a number of snap-on back covers. Inside is a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage complimented by 7GB of SkyDrive cloud storage. A 2000mAh non-removable battery, NFC including Secure NFC for payments, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, and 4G LTE support are also included.

The prominent camera provides a similar optical stability found in other iterations of the phone line, like in the Lumia 928. In a normal mode, the camera can produce 8-megapixel images, while an additional Nokia Smart Camera app, which will be added to some Lumia devices as a firmware update in the future, will provide 5-megapixel snapshots. The lower resolution for the Smart Camera app is compensated for by a number of different modes, such as taking 10 frames and selecting the best one, layering the frames and selecting aspects to fade, providing a layered motion-blur effect, or even removing unwanted people or objects.

The main rear camera is capable of recording 1080p HD video at 30fps, the front-facing camera can capture 1280x960 images and record video, and Hipstamatic has also been brought onboard to create an app for the phone that provides filters in a similar way to Instagram, but within a Metro-designed app.

The Lumia 925 will cost around 469 euros ($616) before carrier subsidies and taxes, and is launching in US on T-Mobile, China Mobile in China, and Vodafone in parts of Europe in June.
