Competes more directly with services like Square
Groupon has launched a new point-of-sale app for the iPad, Breadcrumb POS. Unlike Breadcrumb Pro, which is oriented at larger, more established retailers, POS is aimed at small businesses. It nevertheless offers features such as tipping, kitchen tickets, custom items and menus, multiple tax rates and discounts, and support for a cash drawer and multiple printers.
The app may put Groupon into more direct competition with Square, which was the first company to succeed with an iOS-based point-of-sale system. Breadcrumb POS is a free download for devices running iOS 6 or later; using the app requires an account with Groupon however, which charges 1.8 percent plus $0.15 per credit card swipe, or 2.3 percent for keyed-in transactions. The standard swipe rate also applies only to Visa, Mastercard, and Discover transactions, as American Express rates can vary.
As a temporary promotion, Groupon is offering $5,000 in free processing along with the purchase of a card reader. All Breadcrumb accounts come with live technical support.
