Google to sell Samsung Galaxy S4 with stock Android for $649

updated 01:40 pm EDT, Wed May 15, 2013

Device will be unlocked, use unlocked bootloader, receive timely updates

Google has unveiled that a version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 with a stock installation of Android will be available to purchase, confirming an earlier rumor. The smartphone will be fully unlocked from purchase, will use an unlocked bootloader, and will apparently receive quicker software updates compared to the version of Android provided by Samsung.

It will come with 16GB of storage, and will be able to connect to both the 4G LTE networks run by AT&T and T-Mobile. Other than the version of Android running on it, this is the same Galaxy S4 in terms of hardware as the ones already on sale. It is not clear if the phone will run on Android 4.2 or if Google will announce a new version of Android later in the Google I/O developer event.

The Galaxy S4 with stock Android will be available directly through Google from June 26th, priced at $649.
