NEC Medias X first smartphone with liquid-cooled Qualcomm processor

Heat transferred from phone processor to graphite radiator via liquid tube

NEC has unveiled a smartphone aimed at women, which it claims to be the first in the world with a water or liquid-cooled processor. The Medias X 06E, forming part of NTT DoCoMo's summer release list, uses a tube of liquid that transfers heat from the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor to a graphite radiator located elsewhere on the phone, spreading generated heat across the phone instead of in a single place.

While the idea of the cooling system is an interesting one, it is uncertain if it will be of much use in a smartphone. The Verge notes that Qualcomm allows for the processor to be clocked at up to 1.9GHz, yet NEC has it set at 1.7GHz in the Medias X, even with the additional water cooling.

The unique cooling system is accompanied by a 13.1-megapixel rear camera with a backside illuminated sensor with a front-facing 1.3-megapixel counterpart, and a 4.7-inch 720x1280-resolution OLED screen. Power is provided by a 2,300mAh battery, while NFC, Wi-Fi, and compatibility with Japanese digital TV services are also included.

Though the Medias X is unlikely to make it outside of Japan, the liquid cooling could possibly appear in other devices if it is proved to be useful enough in this handset.
