Hands on: HTC One Double Dip Shell

The HTC One Double Dip Shell complements the One nicely

As our review of the HTC One highlighted, there is little doubt that HTC has crafted an impressive device. Although it is made from sturdy and robust materials including aluminum on its front and rear, many users will still want to keep it looking as good as the day they bought it. HTC has stepped into the frame with its own custom Double Dip Shell for the One that offers a tailor-made solution for protecting the device.

The Double Dip, as you can see from the photos, stands out from the crowd with a distinctive design that incorporates a red top and a dark gray bottom coupled with a light grey middle section that wraps from the edges through to the back of the device. Unlike many hard shell designs on the market, the HTC Double Dip actually covers every edge of the device including the aluminum front panels right to the glass edge.

Typically, only soft case designs made from polyurethane would be able to pull this off, as they are stretchable enough to pull on and around a device. HTC has managed to achieve the same level of protection in a shell case by making the Double Dip a snap together design that comes in three pieces. To assemble, users simply slide on the center section and snap in the top and bottom end pieces.

The HTC One is already a relatively large device and inevitably the Double Dip case does add to its dimensions. But it is reassuringly rugged, without adding a great deal of bulk or weight to the device. As an added bonus, it looks really good and is definitely one of the better cases we have seen and used on a smartphone. It can be a difficult process finding the right case for a smartphone, though HTC has made that a little easier for its One customers.

Our only grip with the Double Dip Shell is that there is a little more 'play' than we'd like when gripping the device firmly from the sides with the case fitted. This can make a small creaking sound when gripping the One tightly to wake it from sleep accessing the power button at the top left hand side of the device. It the One had a power button on the side, this would not be an issue.

If you're an HTC One owner, or looking to buy an HTC One, the Double Dip Shell is definitely worth a look. We like it a lot and can certainly recommend it.
