Pebble gains $15M funding, updates SDK with two-way communication

Smartwatch able to communicate back to smartphones

Pebble, the smartwatch that started life on Kickstarter, has received an extra $15 million in funding. The additional funding from investors, on top of the $10.2 million received through its Kickstarter campaign, comes at the same time as the company updates its SDK to include two-way communication for third-party Pebble apps.

The Series A Funding comes from Charles River Ventures, with the startup looking towards growing its software engineering team to expand Pebble's open development platform, as well as scaling the company to match customer demand. Excluding the Kickstarter, this is not the first round of funding that the company has received, as TechCrunch reports four angel investors from Y Combinator and Draper Fisher Jurveston provided $375 early in the product's life.

The SDK, named PebbleKit, now includes the AppMessage subsystem for the watch to both send and receive data. This would in theory allow the watch to send a signal to a smartphone to trigger an action, such as checking into locations or acting as an emergency beacon. Since the SDK is for both iOS and Android devices, iOS developers will need to contact Pebble to whitelist the app in order for two-way communication to work, due to Pebble being part of the Made For iPhone program. Android developers will not need to make contact.

Maybe they could use a few bucks of that to finally ship me the watch I ordered 18 months ago and paid for 6 months ago.
