T-Mobile sticks with ISIS, won't support Google Wallet

Carrier confirms ISIS support via Twitter

T-Mobile customers wanting to use Google Wallet are out of luck, as the carrier confirmed this week that it's blocking the mobile payment solution. Instead, T-Mobile wants its customers to use ISIS, a carrier-backed standard that is currently only available in two metropolitan areas. The confirmation marks T-Mobile as just the latest of the major carriers to block Google's standard as they prepare to roll out their own.

Twitter user @PoliticalGamez contacted T-Mobile this past week, asking why the carrier was keeping Google Wallet from working on his Galaxy Note 2. Responding, T-Mobile USA essentially confirmed that Google Wallet was blocked in favor of ISIS, a wireless payment solution also supported by AT&T and Verizon. ISIS is currently available in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Austin, Texas.

The confirmation has touched off a minor firestorm, with some users responding to T-Mobile that they are unable to access ISIS, as they don't live in one of the supported areas. Others complain that T-Mobile should let them use the payment app of their choosing.

Verizon has also blocked Google Wallet from functioning on its phones, as the carriers are attempting to ramp up support for ISIS. The carrier, though, says that it has not "blocked" Wallet, per se, but that Google needs to alter its app so as not to access certain secure functions of the hardware.
