Ruggedized phone shows bumpers on back, hardware buttons

Images reported to be of the rumored Samsung Galaxy S4 Active have surfaced, complete with a ruggedized casing. The leaked photographs come at the same time as a fresh rumor claiming Samsung is creating a Mega version of the Galaxy S4, following on from the Mega devices revealed by the company last month.

The ruggedized Galaxy S4 Active is seen in images obtained by GSMArena as retaining some of the design of the original device. Sporting a red color, the back has two bumpers on the back, to help protect it when dropped, and three hardware buttons on the front. Despite the addition of the bumpers, there appears to be little protecting the front glass if the phone lands either directly face down, or on a front-facing corner. Inside is a quad-core 1.9GHz processor with an Adreno 320GPU, and the rear camera has apparently been tipped to be downgraded from 13 megapixels to an 8-megapixel version.

A release date for the S4 Active remains unknown, but the appearance of leaked photos could be an indication of an upcoming announcement.

The Samsung WatchON app, used as a TV remote control replacement, has been found to apparently name the S4 Mega outright, within an app update on Google Play. Version 5.0.4 mentions "Added support for upcoming S4 Mega, S4 mini and S4 Active," which SamMobile suggests could possibly be a typographical error, considering last month's announcement of thr Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Mega 6.3.
