Player still in shadow of iPhone, iPad
Apple has sold over 100 million iPod touches since the device was launched in 2007, the company tells The Loop. The media player was conceived as a stripped-down iPhone, lacking any calling, texting, or cellular data functions, but otherwise sharing the same touchscreen interface and many of the same features. It has since become popular as a gaming platform, owing to its ability to run many of the same apps as the iPhone without the extra cost.
The milestone announcement coincides with the launch of a $229, 16GB iPod touch lacking a rear camera and other features of its 32 and 64GB siblings. The model should address complaints about the cost of fifth-gen Touches, which otherwise start at $299.
The Touch remains a popular product for Apple, but iPod sales have been on the decline for years, owing largely to the growing popularity of the iPhone and the iPad. That shift could accelerate thanks to the iPad mini, which is just $100 more than the cheapest Touch.
