Alleged front panel for fifth-gen iPad shows iPad mini influences

updated 10:45 am EDT, Fri May 31, 2013

Tablet's release date still uncertain

Chinese-language site Apple.pro says it has obtained a photo of a front panel for the upcoming fifth-generation iPad. The part mostly resembles panels for previous iPads, except for sporting a thinner bezel on the sides, mimicking the design of the iPad mini. Such a change could help Apple shrink both the size and the weight of a fifth-gen tablet.

The part is consistent with several reports hinting that Apple wants to carry lessons from the Mini to the full-sized iPad. Beyond a thinner bezel, that may also involve switching to less rounded edges. When new iPads might ship is still unclear, but current rumors have pointed to a release sometime in the fall, possibly after an anticipated September launch of one or more new iPhones.
