Nokia Music service extends to Asha, initial rollout in Russia

updated 12:36 pm EDT, Fri May 31, 2013

Up to four multi-hour mixes downloadable by Asha users

Nokia will be allowing users of the Asha range of smartphones to use its free music streaming service for the first time. Previously only usable by Lumia Windows Phone devices, the Nokia Music with Mix Radio service will be available on Asha touch devices in the coming weeks, and will initially roll out in Russia before heading into other markets.

The company's library of 24 million tracks will be open to users, according to a Nokia blog post, and will use the same Mix system as shown on the Lumia version. Users can listen to personalized music playlists from various genres and categories in more than 100 different channels, all of which have been curated by Nokia Musicologists, though a user-created version can also be generated. Nokia Music has also been optimized for the Asha experience, so that Mixes can be streamed or downloaded over 2G connections, as well as over 3G and Wi-Fi. Up to four mixes, each representing hours of music, can be stored on a device.

The first wave of Asha devices to get Nokia Music will be the Asha 305, 306, 308, 309, 310, and 311. While it will roll out into other markets in the future, Nokia has not advised of any specific rollout schedule, nor if the subscription option will also make the transition to the Asha.
