ARM takes aim at mid-range mobiles with Cortex-A12, Mali-T62

ARM reveals new chip and IP tech for 2014 mid-range mobiles

ARM has revealed its latest processor for mobile devices, the Cortex-A12, which it has developed for the booming mid-range segment. Also new is the Mali-T62, a new mobile GPU that can be paired with Cortex-A12 cores. The Cambridge, England based chip designer also revealed the complementary Mali-V500 video support chip and POP IP technology that reduces system bandwidth and power requirements, while enabling playback of protected video content using TrustZone verification.

"Mobile users expect a range of devices at different price points and for a mid-range mobile experience to include some high end mobile features. With a billion smartphones predicted to ship in 2013 and tablets projected to out-ship notebook PCs, device-makers can now provide quality, high-performance mobile products with the features that matter the most, at a range of price points," said Ian Drew, chief marketing officer and executive vice president, ARM.

The new Cortex-A12 architecture is designed to replace the older Cortex-A9 technology that once featured in flagship devices, but is now commonly found in some mid-range devices. However, the Cortex-A12 offers 40 more processing power while reducing power consumption as it is built on a 28nm process against the 40nm process used in the Cortex-A9 design. Further, the chip supports ARM's big.LITTLE architecture (as seen in the Samsung Exynos 5 Octa) and can be paired with ARM's power saving Cortex-A7 cores.

The new Mali T-622 supports OpenGL ES 3.0, while ARM also claims that it is the most compact mobile GPU that fully supports full profile GPU computing. Also targeted at mid-range devices, the new GPU is said to bring similar performance to ARM's current high-end mobile GPUs, but offers 50 percent better battery performance.

The Mali-V500 has been developed to deliver parallel video processing support, offloading processing tasks from the GPU. It also supports a multicore implementation, scaling from 1080p/60 to 4K Ultra HD at 120fps. It also includes ARM's POP tech and supports TrustZone IP protection for movies and TV content in an embedded hardware, rather than a more easily hackable software solution.

The new ARM technology will debut in mid-range mobile devices from mid-2014, or around 12 months from now.
