Jelly Bean reaches 33-percent penetration, Ice Cream Sandwich still popular

Gingerbread is still the most-used version of Android, according to recent figures from the Android Developer Dashboard. The latest update, covering the last two weeks, shows a total of 36.5-percent of users access the Google Play store through Android versions 2.3 to 2.3.7, beating both Ice Cream Sandwich and the current Android iteration, Jelly Bean.

While in second place with 33 percent, Jelly Bean continues to have issues getting devices on 4.2, with only four percent of Android devices using the latest generation instead of versions starting 4.1, which makes up 29 percent of the population. Phone manufacturer's preference to put version 4.1 or Ice Cream Sandwich onto their devices instead of the latest version of Android is forcing a much slower adoption of version 4.2 than Google would prefer. Ice Cream Sandwich, namely versions 4.0.3 to 4.0.4, take up just over a quarter of the platform's distribution.

Of the remainder, version 2.2 Froyo has 3.2 percent, version 2.1 Eclair is used by 1.5 percent of devices, and both aging version 1.6 Donut and version 3.2 Honeycomb managed to garner 0.1-percent of the distribution. Android fragmentation continues to be a problem for the operating system.

Google recently revealed that it had seen over 900 million activations of Android, at its Google I/O developer event. Two years previously, there were just 100 million activations. Google Play app installs are also increasing, with the total app installation number just crossing over 48 billion, and an estimated 2.5 billion apps installed in that month alone.
