Dell, Lenovo, others using drive in new products

Storage manufacturer Seagate has launched a new line of ultra-slim 2.5-inch form factor hard disk drives. The new Seagate Laptop Ultrathin line of drives are 5.1mm thick, 3.3 ounces, and come in a maximum capacity of 500GB. Manufacturers Dell and Lenovo have confirmed that some of the Computex-revealed line of slim notebooks and ultrabooks will use this drive.

The drives spin at 5400RPM, and a 5.6ms average latency, boast 16MB of cache, and will transfer data at speeds of up to 100MB per second. Peak power consumed by the drive is 1.4W.

The Seagate Laptop Ultrathin is expected at retail at the end of the summer. The 500GB capacity will sell for $89.

Maybe Apple will make these an option in the new MacBook Pros- for a lot less than the crazy "fusion" drives. Seriously- the cloud is great if you have gigabit internet- but those of us with DSL still need a lot more than a 128GB hd in our laptops.
