Apple allegedly files for 'iWatch' name in Russia

updated 09:26 am EDT, Wed June 5, 2013

Status of trademark still unsure

Apple has filed to register the "iWatch" product name in Russia, says local news site Izvestia.ru. The application is said to have been made under the 9th and 14th classes for the International Classification of Goods and Services. AppleInsider comments, though, that it hasn't been able to verify the registration through the Russian Federal Service for Intellectual Property.

Apple has been known to file for new product names overseas, but usually via shell businesses in order to maintain some secrecy. The iPad name, for instance, was secured for Apple as far back as 2006 by a linked firm called "IP Application Development Limited," or IPAD. It's unclear whether Apple has been pursuing the same course with the iWatch; Izvestia does claim, though, that the first iWatch trademark filing was actually made in Jamaica last December.

When an iWatch might launch is also unknown. Many reports have backed the existence of the device, but while some have suggested it could launch as soon as this fall, others have said it won't arrive until 2014. Most rumors about fall launches have concentrated on an iPhone 5S, a low-cost iPhone, a fifth-generation iPad and/or a second-gen iPad mini.
