Samsung starts roll-out of Galaxy S4 firmware, adds more storage

updated 10:26 am EDT, Thu June 6, 2013

Operating system now takes up less space, option to move apps to microSD

Samsung has started to roll out a software update for the Galaxy S4 which will help save space on the smartphone. Following complaints from users, the update will free up the amount of available storage from 9.15GB to 9.23GB on the 16GB model, and will also add a function to allow for apps to be moved to the microSD card, instead of being stored on the built-in memory.

Buyers of the Galaxy S4 found that the 16GB model immediately lost approximately 45-percent of its storage space to Samsung's flavor of Android, along with various additional apps. While others, such as HTC and Microsoft, have been noted as supplying their devices with a fairly bloated base installation, Samsung was forced to work on the issue after complaints were aired on a BBC consumer affairs show.

The new firmware also includes a number of other updates for the device, according to Sammobile. A new camera firmware, HDR video recording a Smart Pause toggle, and new icons all make an appearance in the download, along with a fix to a purple "smearing" when scrolling, and improved legibility.

At present, the firmware will work on the Snapdragon-powered version, model GT-I9505, but another variant for the Exynos-based S4, model GT-I9500, is also on the way.
