Android 5.0 slated for release in late October?

Key Lime Pie to be 'optimized' OS, 512MB RAM requirement

The next major version of Android could be coming out in October, according to a new report. Android 5.0, also known as Key Lime Pie, could end up being revealed and released to smartphones and tablets at around the same time period as Apple intends to push its iOS 7 mobile operating system to the iPhone and iPad.

Sources of VR-Zone claim the new release will be revealed "sometime in late October," which is said to coincide with an unveiling of the long-rumored Motorola X Phone, mimicking the simultaneous reveal of the Galaxy Nexus and Android 4.0 in November 2011. The release time also seemingly corroborates with an earlier rumor that suggested the mobile OS would be delayed by as much as four months to allow device manufacturers a chance to update their existing phones to newer iterations of Android.

The same report also claims that Android 5.0 will be an "optimized OS" that will work favorably on phones or tablets with 512MB of RAM. While the later versions of Android required higher amounts of RAM and so limited what devices could work with it efficiently, the lower RAM requirement may allow for older or lower-powered devices to be able to run it, and may help fight the ongoing fragmentation of the operating system.
