Sprint updates contract terms, provides options for WiMAX shutdown

Early contract termination, free LTE device included as options

Sprint has updated its terms and conditions for its subscribers, detailing what the carrier could do once it shuts down its WiMAX service. The change, made on May 22nd, takes the form of a single paragraph, and provides customers three different choices, including the option to deactivate the service without being charged an early termination fee.

According to PC World, customers will be provided "reasonable advance notice" of a possible migration from WiMAX to Sprint's 4G LTE network, and will be given the options at that time. Aside from canceling, customers can choose to "complete the Agreement term using your existing device without 4G (WiMAX) capability, namely using the existing device supplied in the contract on much slower connections, or to be transferred over to 4G LTE and be provided with a free standard Sprint LTE-capable device, yet to be determined. Sprint will also offer other options, but these will require a new two-year agreement per line.

The number of affected customers is unknown, but the pool is shrinking. Sprint stopped offering WiMAX phones and tablets early last year in favor of LTE, but has not revealed when it will shut down its WiMAX connections completely.
