Facebook sends printed invitations to June 20 product launch

Invitation mentions small team 'working on a big idea'

Social networking giant Facebook is holding a media event to announce a mysterious new product next week. The invitation, sent in a white envelope to reporters rather than through an e-mail, provides close to zero clues as to what will be revealed on Thursday, June 20 at the Menlo Park headquarters, except that it will be something fairly substantial.

The invitation received by ABC News reads "a small team has been working on a big idea. Join us for coffee and learn about a new product," and is printed to look like a napkin with a coffee mug stain.

It is difficult to work out exactly what Facebook could be revealing at the event. Its last major event was for the Facebook Home interface and HTC First, and while software-only updates have had occasional media attendance requests in the past, it was only for the more-important changes to the service, and not for more-minor items. One possible product could be an RSS reader hosting service to replace the closing Google Reader, as code relating to such a service has recently been found within an API, though this may not be major enough to warrant printed invitations.
