Acer passes on Windows Phone 8 for 2013, wants market to develop

Acer puts onus on Microsoft to drive more sales, apps

Electronics manufacturer Acer won't be releasing smartphones running Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 platform in calendar year 2013, according to executives from the company. Speaking with Pocket-lint, Acer vice president for the EMEA region said that the company doesn't yet see Microsoft's fledgling system as a safe bet. The company wants Microsoft to do a better job of laying out the benefits of its platform before Acer will commit to producing a handset for it.

"We want to be there," the Acer exec said, "but as someone who is growing up in the industry, we have to take bets and right now we know that [Android] works. For us, taking {a bet on Windows Phone] is not the right decision this year."

Acer is looking to move units in volume as it transitions into more smartphone manufacturing, and Windows Phone 8, despite Microsoft's massive marketing push to generate buzz for the platform, has failed to gain much traction among consumers. For the moment, it lags far behind both Google's Android and Apple's iOS in terms of mobile market share.

Perhaps worse than the low sales is the dearth of quality apps in Microsoft's Windows Phone app store. To date, the company has roughly 150,000 apps available. It has several of the top apps from other platforms, but very little in the way of high quality second-tier apps that could drive interest in the OS.

Acer is calling on Microsoft to do more to realize the potential of its operating system. "Microsoft, we can't build your brand for you," the executive said in the interview.
