Two more Apple patents challenged by anonymous parties at USPTO

updated 03:47 pm EDT, Mon June 17, 2013

Most likely candidates for reviewing party Samsung, Google

Two more "anonymous" patent re-examination requests for Apple patents have been filed with the US Patent and Trade Office (USPTO). The two patents, involving Apple's Visual Voicemail and autocorrect features, are both at stake in the ongoing legal maneuvers between the Cupertino manufacturer and Samsung.

Both patents are alleged against various devices in the second Apple versus Samsung trial, scheduled for 2014. The autocorrect patent was asserted against Samsung in its preliminary injunction motion against the Galaxy Nexus handset. Judge Koh ruled that "Apple has shown that it is likely to succeed on the merits at trial in its claims that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus infringes claims 18, 19, and 27 of the '172 [autocorrect] Patent." The infringements have since been worked around.

Patent analyst Florian Mueller sees the most likely filer of the "anonymous" requests as Samsung, with the possibility of Google to assist with legal defense against assorted Android products. He believes that "Any definitive invalidation of these patents, should it ultimately happen, is years off."

Hahaha! The first sentence should read, 'Two more "anonymous" patent re-examination requests for Apple patents...'
    Anonymous. Indeed. ;)

Other than the legal fees, I agree w/ that last sentence. Why sweat it...it'll be years before a definitive judgement is made. Just as well go about your business, regardless.
