Dust, waterproof smartphone uses echo cancellation, noise suppression
AT&T has added a ruggedized smartphone from NEC to its business-oriented range of smartphones. Combining a 3.1-inch display with a QWERTY keyboard, the NEC Terrain is claimed to be waterproof and dustproof, uses a Gorilla Glass screen, and exceeds military specifications for shock distribution, as well as having mid-range smartphone features.
Inside the toughened case is a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, with 8GB of storage expandable by up to 32GB, a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera, a front-facing 0.3-megapixel version, and connectivity with AT&T's LTE network. Dual speakers and earSmart technology provide echo cancellation and noise suppression, which could be useful in a noisy working environment, though the admirable specifications list is marred by the use of Android 4.0 rather than a later version.
The NEC Terrain will be going on sale for $100 with a two-year agreement through the carrier's Business Solutions section from June 21st.
