Samsung boasts thinnest Windows 8 tablet

Following Samsung's Ativ-themed launch event in New York City, the company invited press to try out the new Ativ Tab 3 tablet. The device is promoted as the thinnest Windows 8 tablet set to arrive on the market, with a 10.1-inch display that places it in direct competition with the iPad and a slew of Android-powered alternatives. Electronista spent some hands-on time with the new device ahead of its public release.

With an 8.8mm-thick chassis, the Ativ Tab 3 is certainly one of the thinnest Windows 8 tablets that we've had a chance to handle. With a relatively narrow bezel and 1.5-pound weight, the device could be easily mistaken for an Android-powered tablet until the display is illuminated to reveal the Metro tiles.

The company appears to have packed the Intel Atom chipset tightly within the frame, resulting in a flat backside and generally plain aesthetics. The Tab 3 lacks the unique styling of the Galaxy Note 10.1, while the plastic construction lacks the solid feel of a machined aluminum shell.

The new Ativ offers 1366x768 resolution, typical for most tablets in the size class, but we are left wondering how it compares to the 3200x800 panel on the Ativ Q. The hardware appears to keep up with basic Windows 8 operations, however we were unable to gauge browser performance without a cellular or Wi-Fi connection.

Samsung appears to be hoping a $699 price tag will entice potential buyers who may be seeking the Windows 8 tablet experience without paying as much as a full-fledged notebook or convertible. When the Ativ Tab 3 ships this summer, a keyboard cover will be included with the basic package.
