HP bypasses Windows RT, Chrome OS for Android with Slate 21

HP has introduced it first Android-powered AIO desktop PC running on a Tegra 4 ARM-based CPU clocked at 1.8GHz, bypassing Microsoft's Windows RT and Google's other desktop-capable OS, Chrome. The new tablet centers on a 21-5-inch IPS touchscreen display with support for 10-point multi touch, while it also includes a stand fitted to the rear to help it stay in an upright position. HP also ships the Slate 21 with a wired keyboard and mouse for a more traditional desktop computing experience, despite the mobile origins of its operating system.

Helping to round out the package, HP has built in dual DTS specified stereo speakers, while a TrueVision HD Webcam helps users stay in touch with family and friends. Like some Android smartphones, the Slate 21 incorporates Wireless Direct printing capabilities. It runs the current version of Android 4.2.2, although it is not yet known whether the device is running a stock version of Android, or an HP custom job. It is likely that HP has applied some degree of customization to help the device work more optimally in its desktop configuration.

Early benchmarks show that the HP Slate 21 scored 23, 584 points on the AnTuTu benchmarking utility. The results suggest that the device could potentially deliver a very solid, albeit low-end, desktop user experience. One of the key advantages in choosing Android over Windows RT, which is also designed to run on ARM-based chips like the Tegra 4, is that there are hundreds of thousands of apps ready for immediate download. There are far fewer available for Windows RT, while its main advantage over Google's Chrome OS is that it does not require an always-on connection. [via CNET]
