AT&T: HTC First Facebook phone sold out, discontinued

updated 07:27 pm EDT, Tue June 25, 2013

Dollar sale sold through entire inventory of HTC device

According to AT&T, the Facebook Phone is sold out, and the company will not be acquiring another batch. Very shortly after release, AT&T denied rumors that it was discontinuing the phone, despite marking it down to $1 with a two-year contract less than two months after release.

Of the dollar sale on the phone, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega said "We sold a bunch more when we lowered the price, we sold everything we had on that." The CEO believes that sales of the ill-fated device will help AT&T's corporate relationship with Facebook in the long run. "We have a great relationship with Apple just like we have a great relationship with Facebook," the executive said. "We look forward to working with them to make Home better."

The Facebook Home implementation on the HTC One phone fuses an overlay that brings contacts in front of apps, instead of containing them within apps and device notifications. The home screen is dominated by status feed updates, while individual contacts appear in a system called Chat Heads. Those opting to remove the socially-focused user interface are able to use a stock installation of Android.

When the company marked down the phone, AT&T commented on the matter, saying that the company does "pricing promotions all the time, and have made no decisions on future plans." Electronista spoke with an AT&T corporate staffer who did call the sales numbers on the phone "challenging to justify" the prospect of continuing sales, but stopped short of saying that the phone's days are numbered at the time.
