Facebook announces beta testing program for Android app

updated 05:24 pm EDT, Thu June 27, 2013

Will give people early access to new app features

Facebook is launching a beta testing program for its core Android app, according to an announcement. People who sign up for the program will be able try out upcoming features in advance. The tradeoffs include automatic feedback being sent to Facebook, and a higher risk of crashes and other glitches.

The company's director of mobile engineering, Mike Shaver, suggests that beta testing could extend to other Android Facebook apps as well. "Without [speaking to] future plans, we could see how that could benefit us as well," he says regarding a Facebook Home beta. Other Facebook Android apps include Instagram, Messenger, and Camera.
