Photos, video allegedly show complete low-cost iPhone assembly

updated 09:18 am EDT, Mon July 8, 2013

Sample rear shell still unfinished

A video and a new set of photos (below) are said to depict the combined front and rear halves of the upcoming low-cost iPhone, sometimes known as the iPhone Lite. A number of rear shells have been spotted in the past, but the front panel is new. Techdy claims that the front panel will be black in all cases, despite the rear shell coming in blue, pink, yellow, green, and white shades.

"The budget iPhone will be made substantially from plastic (we can feel it's actually polycarbonate material)," the site adds. "It will have a 4" screen, like the iPhone 5, and interestingly, the budget iPhone actually has a shape that's similar to Apple's original iPod. When we hold the budget iPhone in our hands, the plastic chassis does not feel cheap at all. Unlike the plastic build quality of the Samsung Galaxy phones, the plastic material used on the budget iPhone feels more sturdy."

The sample rear shell currently only has pinholes where the SIM slot and power and volume buttons would normally be located, but a possibility is that the shell was obtained before holes had been punched out during production.

Techdy is using the leaked parts as the basis of a copycat Android phone called the Basic Bear, which is slated to ship for $199 in September. Most rumors have had the low-cost iPhone shipping around the same timeframe.
