Microsoft impending management shakeup announcement on Thursday?

updated 07:26 pm EDT, Tue July 9, 2013

Few concrete details of the previously reported shift known

According to reports from within Microsoft, the software giant is finally planning on revealing its plans for a major management shuffle on Thursday, its biggest in at least five years. The changes will shift duties and areas of responsibility of many of the Microsoft executives to eliminate management overlap and redundancies, and conclude a shift away from software development and towards what CEO Steve Ballmer calls a "devices and services" company.

Microsoft server business head Satya Nadella will oversee a new cloud computing and business department. The current head of Microsoft Windows business, Julie Larson-Green, will migrate to the company's hardware efforts including the Surface and Xbox lines.

Gartner analyst David Smith said of the rumored reorganization that "what they have has worked for the past and led to some pretty profitable businesses, but when people are aligned with certain goals they may not be thinking the right way for the future."

"It feels like it is going to be titanic -- that Steve is doing this change for his legacy," said sources familiar with the situation. "It's the first time in a long time that it feels like that there will be some major shifts, including some departures." Microsoft has declined comment on the reports.
