Rumor of Foxconn hiring spurs speculation on next iPhone

Report refers to 'iPhone 6' but may be hinting at 'lite' model

China Business News is reporting that recruiters in Zhengzhou in the Henan province of China have begun a "large-scale" drive for new workers, suggesting that Foxconn is beginning the ramp-up for both Apple's next round of new iOS models as well as preparing for what is likely to be another record holiday season for the Cupertino giant. The Foxconn facility there has capacity for another 90,000 workers before it hits the 300,000-worker peak seen during the 2012 holiday rush, where Apple found itself scrambling to make the then-new iPhone 5 and iPad models fast enough to meet demand.

Apple is expected to bring out an "iPhone 5S" (if naming tradition holds) sometime this fall, ahead of the holiday buying season. The iPhone 5 was introduced in mid-September of last year, and this year there is speculation that Apple may introduce a second model -- often referred to as a "low cost" iPhone -- alongside the next regular iPhone. In addition, the company is expected to introduce updated iPads, a new Mac Pro and possibly other new or updated hardware, not to mention the formal release of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks.

The "iPhone 5S" is expected to physically resemble the iPhone 5 but with upgraded capabilities. Reports have mentioned a significantly better camera, an upgraded processor and possibly an improved battery. A complete design overhaul is expected with the arrival of the iPhone 6, which is not expected until late next year -- though some of the tipsters in the CBN report believed the ramp-up was in fact for an "iPhone 6" model.

At the same time Apple is rumored to cut iPhone production by 20 percent.

    Rumors are stupid.

Both rumors could actually be true. Remember that the iPhone is made at more than one faciility -- a number of them, in fact. The "cuts" rumor could be Apple adjusting inventories for the older model it may no longer build or need as many of (like the iPhone 4 possibly), while the one factory mentioned in the story is ramping up for the iPhone "5S."
